Health Occupations

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Grades: 11, 12

Prerequisites: Good reading and writing skills, good physical health, and emotional maturity.

Note: This is a full year course with clinicals.

Credits: 2 1/2 Credits

Description: Health Occupations introduces the student to various health concepts and trains the student to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). The CNA is responsible for giving basic nursing care. This program is available to students who plan to go into the health care system. Upon completion of Health Occupations I, the student is prepared to take the Nurse Aide Training Competency Exam which allows for certification from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Special Requirements: All students must purchase FVCC prescribed uniform top, white pants, and identification badge for clinical sites. White support shoes are required with white hose or socks. A watch with a second hand is mandatory to take vital signs. The law requires all persons involved in patient care in any health agency to have a chest x-ray or 2-step tuberculin skin thest and a hepatitis B vaccination series as part of their yearly physical exam. This must be done before clinical experiences begin.

This program is located at an off-campus site and students must provide their own transportation.

Students must pass CPR for Health Care Providers with an 84% or better, units on Safety, Blood Pathogens, and Universal Precautions with no less than a 70% to remain in class for clinicals.

This also helps them to better understand the multicultural diversity of healthcare in the world."

Experience

Prior to teaching, Mrs. Alterie worked as a registered nurse in the acute health care setting. Her area of expertise was in cardiac care and medical-surgical nursing. Mrs. Alteries has been with Fox Valley Career Center since 1993.

Responsibilities

Mrs. Alterie prepares students to function independently in the role of Nursing Assistant in a healthcare facility. She introduces students to the healthcare field by offering internship opportunities while preparing students to provide basic hands-on healthcare skills.
