Yukon River Expedition
Program Description

The John G. Shedd Aquarium and Wilderness Classroom Organization are pleased to announce the launch of the Yukon River Expedition, a new program that connects people online to remote, wild environments via satellite technology.
Starting July 26, a teacher and three college students from Glenview, DeKalb and Champaign, IL as well as Buchanan, MI, will embark on the learning adventure of a lifetime to promote environmental awareness. The 200 mile Yukon River Expedition is just one leg of the Wilderness Classroom’s North American Odyssey – an 11,700 mile journey by kayak, canoe, and dogsled to gain support and protection for North America’s waterways, while promoting “green and simple” living. The team will be paddling and camping for 10 days from Whitehorse along the Yukon River to Carmacks, Yukon Territory in Canada.

The selected participants for this program include one local middle school teacher, Kevin Boltz and three local college students, Kelsey Dykstra, Maureen Hanzel and Konrad Taube, all who have been actively involved in Shedd Education programs in the past. These individuals will act as ambassadors for Shedd Aquarium and the natural world, connecting online followers to the flora and fauna of the great Pacific Northwest and empowering others to take personal action in conserving these amazing wild spaces.

You can become involved in the journey by visiting the Wilderness Classroom Organization’s (WCO) website at http://www.wildernessclassroom.com/blog/ and learn from their experiences. You can discover how people have used the Yukon River throughout history, explore the wildlife found along its banks and below the water’s surface, and uncover your connections to the river and how you can make a positive impact. This unique opportunity will allow you, your friends and family to share the natural world ambassador experience from home or in a classroom.
