Kindles

The Kindle e-readers have proven very popular! A few reminders to share with your reader: downloading of new materials from the store is not permitted-it's just like i-tunes-someone has to pay for it! Remember that this is a piece of technology equipment-don't take it to lunch. Keep track of it and don't leave it lying on your desk or on the bus.

Thank You!

PTO recently approved funds to be used to purchase Kindle electronic readers for the library! I was so excited to share this news with a class yesterday. Thank you for your generosity to the library! Be watching this spot for photos of your students using these devices soon.

2010-11 Incentive

Our year long reading incentive has begun. In 2009-10, HMS students read over 16,000 books. We want to beat that this year! For every three books that a student reads, a ticket will be awarded. Students should drop their tickets in the designated "bucket" to be eligible for a prize drawing at the end of each month. Prizes include ice cream, slushies, skating, bowling, pizzas, gift cards, and miniature golf.

Special thanks to our sponsors of this incentive: Hill's Store in Kaneville, Paisano's Pizza, Family Fun Center, FunWay, St. Charles Bowl.

Sally Walker visits Harter!

Sally Walker visits Harter!

Tuesday, March 23rd, author Sally Walker visited Harter Middle School. During her visit, she held an assembly for each grade level. The topics of discussion were on how to do research, how to write an effective paper, and how the printing process comes together. Students and staff enjoyed the presentations and talked about her visit for weeks. To prepare for her visit, the whole school read and did activities from her book "Written in Bone".

Author visit is enjoyed by TEACHERS too!

Author visit is enjoyed by TEACHERS too!

Several of our teachers commented on the wonderful visit by Roderick Gordon. Here is a quote from one teacher: "I was thoroughly engaged the entire time, as were most of our kids. I could have listened to more! I hope we have more of these opportunities." We hope Anderson's Book Shop provides more author visits for us in the future. Sally Walker will be coming to Harter the end of March thanks to a grant from the Kaneland Foundation.

One Fine Day Radio Play

One Fine Day Radio Play

On Wednesday, February 24th, the 8th grade challenge language arts students put on an old-fashioned radio play for their peers. Using their imagination, a few odd props, and the wonders of technology, the students brought to life the day that Orville and Wilbur Wright flew for the very first time.

Sixth Grade Author Visit

Sixth Grade Author Visit

On February 22, all sixth grade students had the opportunity to meet and hear discussion about writing with Roderick Gordon, the co-author of the Tunnels series. Mr. Gordon enjoyed answering student questions and signing books. It was interesting to hear and SEE (through video presentations) the inspiration for this book series. We were excited to have this opportunity, courtesy of Anderson's Bookshop. Watch for a Tunnels MOVIE coming soon! More »
